Raising vital funds for those with spinal injuries

On 28th June 2024, almost five years to the day since I was paralysed from the shoulders down, I will be attempting a traverse of Mt Snowdon, taking on the most challenging route up the mountain, tackling over 3,000ft of elevation gain, and walking the equivalent of a half marathon in a single day. I will be doing this as part of The Push, Back Up's inspirational annual 'race' up and down Snowdon, supported by four good friends.

Many of you will know my story, and how on 22nd June 2019, my life changed in an instant when I suffered a life-changing spinal cord injury.

What you may not know, is that new data released by the NHS, suggests that the prevalence of spinal injury in the UK is double what we had previously thought. In numbers, this means that one person suffers a life-changing SCI every two hours. Over 105,000 people in the UK live with the challenges of mobility impairment, loss of hand function, and changes to bladder and bowel function that are part and parcel of life with a spinal injury.

Back Up's vital services are game-changing for all of us with SCI, and our ambition is to reach every newly-injured person in the UK, many of whom will not receive the specialist care from which I benefited in 2019.

We are growing rapidly, reaching 2,182 adults, 286 families and 211 children in 23/24. We remain the only UK SCI charity to offer children's services. But with your help, we can do so much more.
